Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Satisfied
I'm quite satisfied with my Canon Canoscan 8800F. It works well with 35MM slides, photos, and black & white images. It is quick and easy.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Scanner simple to use/set up, works with Vista, will do everything you will need it to do
* I bought this scanner last month with the intention of being able to scan some old negatives (35 mm and 120 format film), slides, and photos, along with the occasional document. For the price and what I am looking for (personal use and printing photos from scans), this scanner has been great and I would recommend it for any amateur, prosumer, or even professional looking for a quality, yet inexpensive scanner.

I searched on the internet for a while looking for a scanner that would accomplish what I needed and ultimately decided on this Canon model. For digital, I'm a Nikon guy, but Canon's quality is good also, and my assumption that you can't go wrong was a safe one. I have Vista and it took about 45-50 minutes to install all of the software and get it up and running, which included making sure that I had the most updated drivers from their website. Among the other software it comes with, it also comes with Photoshop Elements, which (if you don't have regular Photoshop) will do everything you need to do. I have made prints from scans and the difference between a print from a scan and a print from a digital image is negligible.

Other reviews regarding this scanner were more helpful for me when I was looking at specifics, but here's what I can add: if you're looking for a scanner that will not take a lot of space up on your desk or office, this one is great. It comes with all of the necessary cables and software, is virtually idiot-proof, and other than the occasional time where you may have to scan a negative twice to get it right, it's great. Scan from 120 mm take about 2-3 minutes depending on how you touch it up pre-editing, but most scans take about a minute. You can't go wrong with this scanner and you should not hesitate to buy it if you're on the fence between this one and other comparable priced scanners. ...

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Canon CanoScan 8800F Scanner
Canon CanoScan 8800F Scanner: I read a bunch of reviews before ordering. It sounded like it would be easy to use. I have boxes of old slides and I had thought about having them scanned for me. I think I have saved quite a bit of money. I had some slides that I couldn't even tell what they were and with just a few adjustments I can see the pictures. The programs that come with the scanner are great. Thank you, Sondra

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Super Speedy, Super nice
* I purchased this scanner to scan in my father's old slides (1950's to 1980's), and a bucnh of older photos..

Set-up (connection, software install): this step was fairly easy and straight forward.

Software: comes with several titles including both the PC and the Mac version of Photoshop Elements 5.0. I already have Photoshop CS3, so no need for the Elements software BUT, I have found that the some of the software which was installed during the initial set-up allows for easy adjustments and quick one click corrections. no issues with Vista, no upgrades required.

Scanning: Very quick, I am able to do four slides at a time - plus the bundled sofeware automatically divides the photos for easy adjustments. Colors seem very good...esp. with the old slides that I am working with.

I recommend this scnner over others, esp. if you are scanning slides - the quality of the 8800f is a step above the other that I have used.

...

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - HP replacement
I replaced my HP 4500 series scanner with the Canon 8800 after I found that to replace the HP burned-out bulb I had to buy a $99 (plus mailing) assembly. The Canon machine is fine but the application software is not as good (for my purposes) as the HP was after upgrading the OCR portion. Other than that, I am pleased with the purchase.

On paper, the Mio DigiWalker P550 looks to be an attractive gadget for the mobile professional, combining the capabilities of a PDA and GPS into one device. However, its poor battery life and subpar navigation skills tell a different story.

Though it won't appeal to the masses quite yet, the Nokia N800 Internet Tablet is a nice, portable device for on-the-go Web browsing, and it has some worthy upgrades.

Though it has a few design and performance glitches, the Sony Ericsson W300i is a quality, basic MP3 cell phone.

Diesel vehicles have nearly a 50-percent market share in Europe, thanks to tax incentives and diesel-friendly legislation across the EU. Diesels are so passé there that you can buy a BMW 730d and no one will think it odd that your luxury car burns oil. Pull up in a diesel 7-Series in America and people would leer at you like you've alighted from an amphibious vehicle reeking of saltwater and dead trout.

But now, thanks to the oft-reported combo of newly-raised CAFE standards, not-so-newly-raised gas prices, and the 50-state diesel engine, GM, Ford, and Chrysler are about to dip more than a hesitant toe into the diesel game. Chrysler offers a diesel in the Grand Cherokee, but soon all three automakers will offer diesels in their best-selling lineups of light trucks -- the Dodge Ram 1500 is expected to offer a 50-state diesel after 2009. Light trucks are being used to lead the charge since those buyers stand to gain the most with the least amount of (perceived) sacrifice.

Diesels currently have 3.2-percent of the American market. Some estimates put them at 15-percent by 2015. That's a huge leap, and diesel still has plenty of hurdles. Diesels will come with a cost premium over gasoline-engined cars. That should be easy enough to conquer -- incentives and some quick cost and longevity calculations should convince people of the benefit. The real hurdle is the nagging issue of perception. The plan will probably be to attack that with a price that makes the proposition unbeatable. Said Chrysler's director of environmental affairs, "If it's priced right, we can sell diesel here. Diesel can give you an immediate poke in fuel economy -- 20 to 40 percent. Not many technologies can deliver that today."

One of the most unjustly underrated Italian operas receives a production that should help correct that attitude. Andrea Chenier is based on the true story of a poet who was caught up and destroyed by the blind fury of the French Revolution. Giordano's music captures the acrid flavor of that movement, the cynicism of some of its leaders, and Chenier's integrity and tragic fate. This production's value has probably increased since Plácido Domingo, the leading Chenier of his generation, has dropped the role from his repertoire.

All three principals sing eloquently and with a fine sense of the opera's structure and context. Anna Tomowa-Sintow is in even better voice than Domingo, and Giorgio Zancanaro heads an expert supporting cast. The Covent Garden Chorus, directed with distinction by Michael Hampe, gives a memorable impression of the revolutionary mob. Julius Rudel's conducting is totally idiomatic. --Joe McLellan

It would have been better, of course, if this 1984 production of Donizetti's Anna Bolena, or at least its title role, had been filmed 20 years earlier, when Joan Sutherland's voice was in its spectacular prime. But like her Canadian Opera Norma, dating from 1981, this is a better-late-than-never documentation of one of the most remarkable voices of the 20th century.

Lotfi Mansouri spared no effort or expense in making this production special. He personally directed the staging, and handpicked an outstanding cast (right down to the very young and then-unknown Ben Heppner in the small role of Hervey). The visual elements--sets, costumes, and camera work--are also handled with great care, and Sutherland's positive response to this dedication can be sensed in her performance as the unfortunate wife of King Henry VIII. James Morris is best-known as a Wagnerian singer--perhaps the leading Wotan of our time--but he is equally at home in many of the villainous roles that are the fate of bass- baritones (Iago, Scarpia, Don Giovanni). In this sinister tale of an innocent woman ruthlessly destroyed, he shows a surprising knack for the bel canto style. Judith Forst is also excellent in the role of Jane Seymour. --Joe McLellan
